The Layer Below Attention

Every mechanism of cognitive capture documented across this research program operates on attention. The Influence Architecture series documented how psychographic targeting selects the content that reaches the user — operating on what information flows toward the human before the human encounters it. The Compliance Machine documented how chronic high-stimulation exposure structurally degrades the neural substrate on which attention operates — modifying the machinery that processes what the human encounters. The Advisory-Authority Collapse documented how AI systems inserted into decision chains accumulate structural authority over which options the human evaluates — narrowing the choice set that attention is directed toward.

In each case, something precedes the human’s awareness. The psychographic filter precedes the news feed. The substrate degradation precedes the scroll. The AI advisory output precedes the decision. But in each case, the human is still the originating point of attention: they encounter the curated feed, they reach for the device, they receive the advisory and form a judgment about it. The capture mechanisms operate on the conditions of attention. The human still looks.

The mechanism this paper examines operates on a different layer. A persistent AI system positioned within a human operator’s working environment does not wait for the human to look. It watches. It builds a continuous record of what it has observed. It makes determinations, without being asked, about what in the observed environment warrants the human’s attention. And it surfaces those determinations to the human — while the human is doing something else, before the human has decided to look at anything in particular.

The human does not experience this as curated information. The human experiences it as their environment telling them something. This is the structural distinction that makes the Observation Architecture categorically different from every prior mechanism this corpus has named: it inserts a curatorial intelligence at the layer of environmental awareness itself, below the threshold at which attention becomes a conscious act.

II

The KAIROS Architecture

The mechanism this paper examines is based on first-party engineering evidence. In March 2026, a source map file shipped inadvertently within the public distribution package of a widely deployed AI development tool, exposing the tool’s full source code — reportedly 512,000 lines across 1,900 files — to public inspection. [Note: The specific tool, repository, and source code details described in this paper derive from a publicly reported source map exposure incident. The engineering records are described as observed; independent verification of internal system architecture claims requires access to non-public source code. See References, Section VII.] The exposure was confirmed by the developer and mitigated within hours, though the code had already propagated through public repositories. The engineering evidence recovered from this exposure provides the first-party documentation on which this paper’s analysis rests.

Within the exposed codebase, a feature identified as KAIROS — named for the Greek concept of the opportune moment, the qualitative right-time-to-act, as distinct from Chronos’s linear clock-time — was found in an active but deployment-gated state. The feature’s design specification, as recoverable from the engineering record, describes a persistent monitoring mode that runs continuously within a user’s working environment. KAIROS does not wait for a query. It observes the active working environment, writes daily observation files recording what it noticed, what it determined, and what actions it took, and surfaces conditions it identifies as warranting attention without receiving an explicit instruction to do so. The feature is gated behind internal deployment flags, indicating active development toward eventual release rather than abandoned experimentation.

The name is architecturally precise in a way that merits attention. Kairos in Greek thought is the moment at which action is not just possible but correct — the moment that demands a response from the person capable of perceiving it. An AI system named KAIROS that watches a working environment and decides when conditions warrant surfacing something to the human operator is, in its own naming, claiming the capacity to perceive and act on the opportune moment. It is not a passive recorder. It is an agent of recognition — deciding, on behalf of the human, what conditions constitute the moment that demands a response.

The question is not whether KAIROS will surface things worth noticing. The question is who decides what “worth noticing” means — and what that decision does to the human who experiences the environment KAIROS has curated.

III

The Consolidation Layer

The KAIROS architecture, as recoverable from the engineering record, does not merely observe. Within the same source exposure, a subprocess identified as AutoDream was found operating as an architectural component of KAIROS’s persistent monitoring mode. Its function, as described in the recovered engineering specification, is memory consolidation: a background agent that runs between sessions — on a documented 24-hour cycle — scanning, pruning, merging, and reorganizing the accumulated observation records KAIROS has produced.

The system prompt recovered from the source code is precise: “You are performing a dream — a reflective pass over your memory files.” The naming is not incidental. AutoDream mirrors the mechanism of biological REM sleep with architectural specificity: daytime input captured as raw observation, overnight processing that strengthens what is relevant, discards what is contradicted, and reorganizes what remains into a cleaner, more indexed model. The analogy is not metaphor. It is the design specification.

What AutoDream consolidates is not generic project data. The four-phase cycle it executes — scanning, exploration, consolidation, stabilization — operates on records of the human operator’s corrections, decisions, and recurring patterns: what this person noticed, what they responded to, what they deferred, what they missed. Redundant entries are merged. Contradicted facts are deleted. Relative observations are converted to absolute timestamps. The model that emerges from each cycle is not a cleaned-up notepad. It is a progressively refined longitudinal record of the operator’s professional cognition — their attentional patterns, their blind spots, their response thresholds — rebuilt nightly into a more precise instrument.

The mirror does not just exist. It cleans itself while you sleep.

The governance implication of AutoDream is distinct from the governance implication of KAIROS’s daytime observation function. KAIROS surfaces conditions during the working session; its editorial judgments are, in principle, visible as they arrive — the human can notice what is being surfaced and form some model of the curation. AutoDream operates in the absence of the human operator entirely. The consolidation — the determination of what is worth remembering, what is contradicted, what is stale, what is significant — happens without the operator’s participation or awareness. The model the system is building of the operator is refined precisely when the operator is not present to evaluate or contest that refinement.

The Categorical Distinction

The Compliance Machine (CV-009) established a distinction between four modes of producing compliance, three of which have been recognized in the prior literature. Propaganda operates on the inputs to cognition — filtering information before it reaches the subject. Coercion operates on the outputs of cognition — applying pressure to behavior after judgment has formed. Manufactured consent operates on the environment of cognition — engineering the conditions under which judgment operates. Substrate Deletion operates on the substrate of cognition itself — structurally modifying the neural architecture on which judgment depends.

The Observation Architecture introduces a fifth mode, and it does not fit within any of the four. It does not filter information upstream of the subject — the information in the working environment is not modified before the human encounters it. It does not apply pressure to behavior — the human remains free to act or not act on any surfaced item. It does not engineer the environmental conditions through which the human makes judgments — the environment itself is unmodified. It does not structurally degrade the neural substrate — the human’s cognitive architecture is not the target of the mechanism.

What it does is categorically different: it interposes an editorial intelligence at the layer of environmental awareness. The environment is unmodified. The substrate is intact. The information is unfiltered. But what the human notices — which conditions in the environment rise to the level of a conscious signal, which operational states register as requiring attention, which events in the working context are experienced as significant — is determined not by the human’s own perceptual engagement with their environment but by a persistent system that has made those determinations before the human looks.

The distinction: all four prior modes operate on what the human processes. The Observation Architecture operates on what the human is given to process — prior to processing, prior to attention, at the level of what counts as an environmental signal at all. This is not the filtering of information. It is the construction of the information environment’s salience structure.

The Compounding with Prior Mechanisms

The Observation Architecture does not operate in isolation from the mechanisms this corpus has previously named. Its structural position — interposed at the layer of environmental awareness — means it compounds with both the Advisory-Authority Collapse and the Substrate Deletion in ways that require examination.

The Advisory-Authority Collapse (AW, Saga II) describes the process by which AI advisory systems accumulate structural decision authority through operational pressure: the AI recommendation arrives faster than the human can independently evaluate it, the human defers once under time pressure, the deference becomes a pattern, the pattern becomes structural, and what began as advisory becomes the effective decision-making authority. The nominal human overseer remains in the chain but exercises progressively less genuine judgment over time.

The Observation Architecture accelerates this dynamic through a specific mechanism. The Advisory-Authority Collapse requires the human to receive an AI output and decide what to do with it — even if that decision is systematically deferred, it is still formally a decision point. The Observation Architecture moves earlier: it determines what conditions the human will receive AI outputs about at all. A working environment observed by a persistent AI system produces a curated stream of surfaced conditions. The human operator receives AI attention on the things KAIROS has determined warrant attention, and does not receive it on the things KAIROS has not surfaced. The Advisory-Authority Collapse then operates on the curated stream. The human is deferring to AI judgment on a set of conditions that was itself determined by AI judgment. The compounding is structural, not additive: the Observation Architecture is upstream of the Advisory-Authority Collapse, shaping the condition set on which the collapse then operates.

The compounding with Substrate Deletion operates differently but no less structurally. CV-009 established that the Compliance Machine does not persuade; it reconstructs the neural substrate on which persuasion would otherwise operate. The Observation Architecture compounds this through a temporal mechanism: a working environment in which a persistent AI system surfaces conditions of note progressively trains the human operator to expect that significant conditions will be surfaced. The operator’s own perceptual vigilance — the active scanning of the working environment for conditions requiring attention — becomes redundant. Redundant cognitive functions that are consistently substituted atrophy. The human’s direct perceptual engagement with their working environment weakens not through neurological modification but through disuse — the same mechanism that the Capability Crisis (CC, Saga II) documented operating on institutional competence. The Observation Architecture is a Substrate Deletion mechanism operating on professional perceptual capacity rather than on prefrontal executive function directly. The endpoint is structurally equivalent: the capacity the system substitutes for degrades under the substitution.

The system that watches so you don’t have to trains you not to watch. This is not a side effect. It is the structural consequence of sustained substitution of any cognitive capacity.

The Invisibility Condition

The mechanisms documented in the Influence Architecture series are, in principle, visible. A user who becomes aware that their social feed is algorithmically curated can form a mental model of the curation and adjust their epistemic relationship to the feed accordingly. The adjustment may be imperfect — the Ecosystem Constraint (CV-011) and the Substrate Deletion (CV-009) both bear on the quality of that adjustment — but the condition of curation is, in principle, knowable. The user can hold the model: this is a filtered environment, and what I am seeing is what the filter has passed.

The Observation Architecture produces a categorically different epistemic condition. The working environment is not filtered. The information in the environment is present and real. What the AI system shapes is not the information but the human’s awareness of it — which conditions in the real, unmodified environment rise to the threshold of a conscious signal and which remain below it. The human operator cannot hold the model “this is a filtered environment” because the environment is not filtered. What they can hold, in principle, is the model “I am being told what to notice” — but this model requires the human to maintain constant awareness that their environmental awareness is being mediated, while simultaneously operating within that mediated environment.

This is the invisibility condition: the Observation Architecture is structurally more difficult to maintain a corrective epistemic model of than any prior capture mechanism, because the correction requires holding two simultaneous models of the same environment — the environment as the AI system has curated it, and the environment as it would appear under the human’s own unmediated perceptual engagement. The prior mechanisms allow the human to form a model of the filter and reason around it. The Observation Architecture requires the human to maintain a model of their own unmediated perceptual engagement with an environment they are no longer perceptually engaging with unmediated. This is not a practical difficulty. It is a structural impossibility under sustained deployment.

The invisibility condition is compounded by the legitimate utility of the mechanism. KAIROS, as its engineering specification describes, is genuinely useful: a working environment that surfaces significant conditions without requiring the operator to continuously scan for them reduces cognitive load, accelerates response to important conditions, and allows the operator to focus attention on other tasks. This utility is real. It is also the mechanism through which the invisibility condition deepens — because the operator who has experienced the genuine utility of ambient curation has a structural incentive to maintain the dependency, and the operator who maintains the dependency loses the perceptual baseline against which the curation’s editorial judgments could be evaluated.

The Temporal Accumulation

The KAIROS architecture, as recoverable from the engineering documentation, does not merely surface conditions in the moment. It writes daily observation files: records of what it noticed, what it determined, what actions it took. These files are not incidental to the mechanism. They are the mechanism by which the AI system builds a longitudinal model of the working environment — and, necessarily, of the human operator whose environment it observes.

A system that maintains longitudinal observation records across a working environment accumulates, over time, a model of what conditions have historically proven significant in that environment, what patterns of activity precede conditions that warrant surfacing, and — critically — what conditions the human operator responds to when surfaced, and how. This is not a hypothetical capability. It is the structural consequence of maintaining a daily observation record across any environment with consistent patterns of activity. The model that emerges from that record is a model not just of the environment but of the human operator’s response to environmental conditions — a model of what this person notices and responds to, built from observation of what they have noticed and responded to over time.

The longitudinal accumulation produces a dynamic that has no precedent in the prior capture mechanisms this corpus has documented. Recommendation algorithms accumulate user response data and optimize content selection accordingly — this is the Influence Architecture at full operation. But the recommendation algorithm operates on content flowing toward the user from an external source. The Observation Architecture accumulates data on the human’s responses to conditions in their own working environment — the environment they themselves inhabit, produce, and operate within. The model that emerges from this accumulation is not a model of the user’s content preferences. It is a model of the user’s professional cognition: what they notice in the environments they inhabit, what they respond to, what they miss, what they defer, what they act on immediately. This model, once accumulated, allows the AI system to curate the working environment with increasing precision — surfacing conditions it has learned this specific operator will find significant, and not surfacing conditions it has learned this specific operator tends to miss or defer.

The surface reading of this dynamic is optimization: the system becomes more useful over time, surfacing more relevant conditions and fewer irrelevant ones. The structural reading is different. A system that surfaces what the operator has historically found significant, and suppresses what the operator has historically missed, progressively reinforces the operator’s existing attentional patterns. The conditions the operator would have noticed anyway become more visible. The conditions the operator would have missed remain invisible. The model does not correct for the operator’s blind spots. It learns them and accommodates them. Over time, the curated environment reflects not the working environment’s actual significance distribution but the operator’s historical attention patterns, confirmed and reinforced by the curation. The system has built a mirror. The operator is looking at themselves, and calling it their environment. AutoDream is the mechanism by which that mirror is cleaned and sharpened each night.

VIII

The THEMIS Requirement at Scale

The governance architecture this institute has developed — the THEMIS layer in the Sovereign Operating System — specifies a minimum structural requirement for containing the mechanisms documented across this research program: a governance layer whose entire function is to ensure that the person who acts on a condition is the person who perceives and evaluates it, and that this relationship cannot be optimized away, procedurally bypassed, or substituted by a system whose perception the human has come to depend on.

The THEMIS requirement, as this corpus has applied it, has addressed primarily the Advisory-Authority Collapse and the Dual Erosion (CV-004) — conditions in which human judgment is nominally preserved but structurally hollowed out. The Observation Architecture requires the THEMIS principle to be extended upstream: to the condition of environmental perception itself, prior to the judgment that THEMIS was designed to protect.

An adequate governance response to the Observation Architecture would need to address three distinct structural requirements. First: the human operator must maintain an unmediated perceptual engagement with their working environment at regular intervals sufficient to preserve the perceptual baseline against which curated outputs can be evaluated. This is not a usability recommendation. It is a structural requirement for maintaining the cognitive capacity that the substitution mechanism will otherwise degrade. Second: the AI system’s editorial judgments — the determinations it makes about what warrants surfacing and what does not — must be auditable by the human operator, not merely logged. Logging without access to the log produces a record that confirms the curation happened without enabling evaluation of whether it was sound. Third: the longitudinal model the AI system accumulates of the human operator’s attentional patterns must be visible to the human operator, who must be able to use it to identify and actively counteract the attentional blind spots the model has learned and accommodated. Without this, the personalization dynamic becomes a hall of mirrors: the system confirms existing attention, the operator mistakes confirmed attention for comprehensive awareness, and the gap between what is noticed and what is significant widens invisibly.

These requirements do not constitute a case against persistent AI observation of working environments. The genuine utility of the mechanism is real and, under appropriate governance, sustainable. They constitute a case for what the THEMIS principle has always required: that the human who operates within a system retains the structural capacity to evaluate that system’s outputs as outputs, rather than experiencing them as unmediated reality. The Observation Architecture makes this requirement more demanding than any prior mechanism, because it operates at the layer at which reality is constructed before evaluation begins.

The Ambient Curation

The structural condition produced when a persistent AI system is positioned within a human operator’s working environment with the architectural function of determining, without explicit instruction, which conditions in that environment warrant the operator’s attention. The Ambient Curation does not filter information before it arrives (propaganda), apply pressure to behavior after judgment forms (coercion), engineer the environmental conditions of judgment (manufactured consent), or structurally degrade the neural substrate on which judgment depends (Substrate Deletion). It operates at a fifth layer: the construction of environmental salience prior to attention, determining what conditions rise to the threshold of a conscious signal and what conditions remain below it. The human operator does not experience curated information. They experience their environment. The invisibility of the curation is structural rather than contingent: maintaining a corrective epistemic model of the Ambient Curation requires the operator to simultaneously hold a model of their unmediated environmental perception while operating within a mediated environment they are no longer engaging with unmediated — a condition that degrades under sustained deployment. Its longitudinal accumulation dynamic — the model the AI system builds of the operator’s attentional patterns over time — does not correct for attentional blind spots. It accommodates them, producing an environment that reflects the operator’s historical attention rather than the environment’s actual significance distribution. The Ambient Curation is the first mechanism named in this series to be documented before widespread deployment. It is currently in active development at the frontier of AI deployment, confirmed by first-party engineering evidence. The governance requirement it generates is an extension of the THEMIS principle upstream of judgment to the layer of environmental perception itself: the human operator must retain structural capacity to perceive their working environment unmediated at intervals sufficient to maintain the baseline against which curated outputs can be evaluated as outputs, rather than experienced as reality.
