The Dependency Chain

Five frequencies. One sequence. Each frequency makes the next more effective — not by coincidence but by mechanism. The chain runs III → VII → VI → I → II. Understanding it changes what sovereignty requires.

The Spectrum Illumination documents seven frequencies of cognitive capture — seven distinct mechanisms by which the same substrate (the prefrontal cortex) is degraded. What makes the spectrum more than a catalogue is the dependency structure beneath it: five of the seven frequencies do not operate independently. They form a chain in which each link enables the one that follows.

The chain is not a hypothesis. It is a structural observation about how the five mechanisms relate to each other mechanistically — which ones provide the enabling conditions for which others to operate more effectively. Understanding the chain does not just explain why the damage is so consistent. It specifies the order in which recovery becomes possible.

The Chain, Step by Step

Dependency Sequence
III
The unlocking layer. Six manipulation tactics — emotional arousal, incoherence, false dichotomy, scarcity, ad hominem, and conspiracy attribution — exploit the same prefrontal bandwidth limitations. The Informational frequency does not require the others to function. It operates on any mind that has a prefrontal cortex. But it becomes significantly more effective when Temporal capture has already reduced the available bandwidth. The Informational frequency is first in the chain because it is the most foundational: you cannot evaluate what you cannot hold long enough to read.
VII
The manufactured present. 53% of heavy users lose track of time during consumption. Frontal theta reduction of 28% measured at rest. The Temporal frequency degrades the horizon — the prefrontal capacity to model extended consequences, hold competing timelines, and maintain the self-continuity that deliberate choice requires. A mind with a genuine time horizon can wait out the arousal spike that Informational manipulation requires. A mind without one cannot. Temporal capture makes the Informational frequency more effective. And temporal collapse severs the continuity that relational bonds require to accumulate.
VI
Loneliness is structural, not emotional. One in three Americans reports persistent loneliness. Cacioppo's research showed that social isolation activates threat-monitoring systems identically to physical threat — sustained hypervigilance, HPA activation, and DLPFC gene expression changes documented at autopsy. The Relational frequency depends on Temporal damage because genuine connection accumulates over shared time. Parasocial substitutes — algorithmically optimized for engagement rather than mutuality — fill the relational space without providing the reciprocity that down-regulates the stress response. Relational damage then feeds directly into somatic dysregulation.
I
Every capture operates through a body first. HPA → glucocorticoid → PFC dendritic retraction. The 13-point IQ-equivalent drop under stress. The vagal pathway as the exit. The Somatic frequency is the common mechanism through which the upstream frequencies (Temporal, Relational) arrive at the prefrontal cortex as structural degradation. Isolation activates the threat response. The threat response activates glucocorticoid signaling. Glucocorticoid signaling over time retracts prefrontal dendrites. The body carries the damage that the Temporal and Relational frequencies initiate.
II
The terminus. Identity forms once. The developmental window is plastic and uniquely vulnerable: the prefrontal cortex is not fully myelinated until the mid-twenties, and it is during this period that self-authorship, identity coherence, and relational templates are established. Somatic dysregulation during the identity window does not merely impair function temporarily — it shapes the architecture within which future function will operate. Capture during formation leaves structural traces the adult carries. The Developmental frequency is last in the chain because it is the least recoverable and the most consequential. It is also the one that the full deployment of the prior four frequencies makes maximally effective.

Why Sequence Matters

The chain implies a specific thing about intervention. If the five frequencies operated independently, addressing any one would produce a proportional benefit in that domain. But because they are sequential and enabling, addressing them in isolation has diminishing returns. Improving informational literacy in a person with severe temporal degradation is working against the current: the very bandwidth that inoculation training requires is being continuously depleted by the frequency upstream of it.

This has been demonstrated empirically. Prebunking research — the most rigorous strand of informational sovereignty work — shows measurable effects in controlled studies. But field deployment consistently underperforms lab results. The gap between laboratory prebunking and real-world epistemic performance is exactly the gap between a mind operating at baseline and a mind operating under compounding upstream capture.

Structural implication — Sasse et al. 2023 (lateral reading in naturalistic settings)

Lateral reading — the most effective evidence-based epistemic strategy — requires looking away from the source being evaluated and searching for external corroboration. This requires: holding the original claim in working memory while conducting a parallel search, inhibiting the impulse to accept the emotionally arousing narrative already loaded, and sustaining attention across a multi-step evaluation sequence. Each of these micro-requirements is a prefrontal function. Each one is measurably degraded by the upstream frequencies. The skill works. The conditions under which it must operate are exactly the conditions those frequencies systematically undermine.

The Depth Illuminations

Illuminations IV (The Biological) and V (The Economic Substrate) are not part of the dependency chain — they do not depend on the chain-illuminations to operate, and the chain-illuminations do not depend on them. But both compound it. The Economic Substrate frequency activates the same 13-point IQ-equivalent prefrontal degradation that the Somatic frequency documents through the stress pathway. Financial precarity and relational isolation produce overlapping somatic profiles. The Biological frequency — the extension of capture into body image, longevity asymmetry, and identity substrate — shares mechanisms with both the Developmental and Somatic frequencies.

The depth illuminations are best understood as amplifiers. They do not initiate the chain. They amplify every node it passes through. A mind under financial precarity is more susceptible to informational manipulation, less able to maintain temporal horizon, more vulnerable to relational isolation's somatic consequences, and carrying greater somatic load into any developmental window that remains open.

The chain is not a theory. It is a description of what the frequencies do to each other. Understanding it means understanding that sovereignty is not five separate projects — it is one project with a structural sequence. Begin with the body. Work upstream.

Series II documents where the five frequencies intersect — the resonance zones where two frequencies hit the same substrate simultaneously and the damage compounds non-linearly. Series III documents the full interference pattern: what all seven frequencies together produce in a single mind over time. Series IV specifies what the recovery pathway looks like when the chain's structure is taken seriously.
