The internal test for each item: Would a human or machine doing this instead produce a categorically inferior outcome — not merely a less efficient one?

The Goldman Sachs equity trading transition is the most documented case. In 2000, the firm employed 600 traders on its equity trading desk. By 2017, that number had fallen to 2, supplemented by approximately 200 engineers maintaining algorithmic systems. This is not a projection or a forecast. It is a completed transition in one specific function — routine equity execution — where the machine column's advantages in speed, consistency, and pattern recognition produced categorically superior outcomes.

The transition tells us precisely where the domain split falls. Routine execution — matching orders, optimizing timing, managing inventory across liquid markets — moved entirely to machines. What remained were the functions in the left column: strategic decisions about what to trade and why, client relationships built on trust and contextual knowledge, and the moral and reputational judgment that no algorithm can bear responsibility for.

The Human Column: Strategic Judgment Under Moral Uncertainty

The human column in finance is not "intuition" or "gut feeling" — terms that mystify what is actually a structured cognitive capability. Strategic judgment under genuine moral uncertainty means making decisions where the relevant variables are not fully quantifiable, where the consequences fall on identifiable people, and where the decision-maker bears personal accountability for the outcome.

When a wealth advisor recommends a portfolio allocation to a client approaching retirement, the decision involves the client's risk tolerance (partially quantifiable), their life circumstances (qualitative — health, family obligations, psychological relationship to money), and a moral dimension: the advisor bears responsibility if the recommendation causes harm. This responsibility cannot be transferred to an algorithm without dissolving the accountability structure that makes financial advice a fiduciary relationship rather than a data service.

Creative structuring of novel financial problems — designing a financing arrangement for a situation that does not fit existing templates — requires the kind of analogical reasoning across dissimilar domains that Brynjolfsson & McAfee (2014) identify as persistently human. Political and reputational judgment — knowing which deals will attract regulatory scrutiny, which clients create institutional risk, which market positions are technically legal but reputationally catastrophic — depends on embodied social knowledge that cannot be reduced to pattern matching across historical data.

The accountability structure
When Knight Capital lost $440 million in 45 minutes on August 1, 2012, the SEC investigation (Release No. 34-70694, 2013) found that the loss resulted from deploying untested algorithmic code without adequate human oversight. The question of who was accountable — who bore moral and legal responsibility — could not be answered by pointing to the algorithm. Accountability required humans. This is not a transitional limitation. It is a structural feature of financial systems embedded in legal and social frameworks that require identifiable moral agents.

The Machine Column: Processing at Scale

The machine column in finance represents capabilities where algorithmic systems produce categorically superior outcomes — not merely faster or cheaper versions of what humans do, but qualitatively different levels of performance that human cognition cannot approach.

Pattern recognition across market data volumes is the foundational capability. Modern markets generate data at rates that exceed human cognitive bandwidth by orders of magnitude. The DTCC processes approximately 100 million transactions daily through straight-through processing systems. No human team could perform this function at any staffing level. This is genuine machine irreplaceability — not substitution of human capability but extension beyond its limits.

Real-time compliance monitoring at transaction scale illustrates the same principle. Regulatory frameworks require monitoring every transaction against rules that are complex but formalizable. A human compliance officer reviewing transactions one at a time would take centuries to process a single day's volume. The machine does not do this task better than a human. It does a task that no human could do at all.

Fraud detection at speed and scale, risk modeling across correlated variable sets, and scenario simulation across market conditions all follow the same pattern: these are capabilities defined by data volumes and processing speeds that exceed human cognitive architecture, not by judgment or moral reasoning.

The Documented Transitions

The finance domain is unusual among the Capability Pairs because several transitions from the right column are already complete, providing empirical evidence rather than requiring forward projection.

The Goldman Sachs equity trading transition (2000–2017) eliminated 598 of 600 trading positions in routine equity execution. The DTCC straight-through processing system automated post-trade settlement at volumes no human workforce could handle. High-frequency trading firms operate with minimal human intervention in execution, concentrating human roles in strategy design and oversight.

The completed transitions in finance do not show humans becoming unnecessary. They show the domain split becoming visible — routine processing moving to machines while strategic judgment, client relationship, and moral accountability remain irreducibly human.

These completed transitions allow a sharper analysis than is possible in domains where the transition is still theoretical. The Goldman Sachs case does not show 600 humans replaced by machines. It shows 600 humans performing a mixed function (part judgment, part execution) replaced by a cleaner split: 2 humans performing pure judgment functions and 200 engineers maintaining systems that perform pure processing functions. The total human headcount increased from 600 to 202. The nature of the human work changed categorically.

The meaningful work question raised by this transition — what happens to displaced workers whose skills were in the mixed function that no longer exists — is addressed in HC-024b (The Meaningful Work Problem), not here. This paper's scope is the domain split itself: what is irreducibly human and what is irreplaceably machine in finance.

Fidelity: Fails for routine finance. Algorithmic trading systems optimize for speed and profit extraction, not for the preservation of human judgment capacity. The 30-day test: if algorithmic trading systems were unavailable for 30 days, could human traders perform the routine execution function adequately? No — market volumes have scaled beyond human capacity, creating irreversible dependency. At the strategic and institutional level, fidelity is partial: human judgment remains in the loop for large-scale decisions, but the loop is narrowing as algorithmic systems absorb more decision authority.

Transparency: Fails. Algorithmic trading strategies are proprietary trade secrets. High-frequency trading firms do not disclose their algorithms, optimization targets, or decision logic. Regulatory access exists (Level 3) through SEC examination authority, but public transparency (Levels 1 and 2) is absent. Affected populations — pension fund beneficiaries, retail investors, communities affected by capital allocation decisions — have no visibility into the systems that shape their financial outcomes.

Participation: Fails. No major algorithmic trading system, robo-advisor, or automated lending platform has been designed with structured governance input from the populations most affected by its decisions. Financial technology is designed by engineers and deployed on populations. The governance gap is total.

Axis 3: The Stakes

The documented consequences in finance are not hypothetical. The May 6, 2010 Flash Crash — documented in the SEC/CFTC joint report — saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average drop approximately 1,000 points in minutes, temporarily erasing nearly $1 trillion in market value. The cause was algorithmic trading systems interacting in ways their designers did not anticipate, in the absence of adequate human judgment oversight. The market recovered within minutes, but the event demonstrated that algorithmic systems operating at speed and scale can produce catastrophic outcomes that no individual algorithm intended.

The Knight Capital incident (August 1, 2012) is more instructive because the consequences were permanent. A software deployment error activated obsolete trading code that executed millions of unintended trades in 45 minutes, producing a $440 million loss that drove the firm to the edge of bankruptcy. The SEC investigation (Release No. 34-70694, 2013) found inadequate risk controls and insufficient human oversight of algorithmic deployment. The loss was not caused by market conditions or strategic error. It was caused by the absence of human judgment at a critical operational juncture.

Systemic risk concentration
BIS Working Paper 1040 (2022) documents the systemic risk created by algorithmic trading concentration. When multiple firms use similar algorithms trained on similar data, their systems tend to converge on similar strategies — creating correlated behavior that amplifies rather than dampens market shocks. The diversity of human judgment, with its idiosyncratic biases and varied analytical frameworks, historically provided a natural dampening mechanism. Algorithmic monoculture removes this dampener. The systemic risk is not in any individual algorithm but in the loss of judgment diversity across the system.

Acemoglu (2021, NBER) frames the broader stakes: automation in finance has disproportionately displaced mid-skill workers while concentrating gains among technology owners and high-skill strategists. The productivity gains from algorithmic trading are real but the distribution of those gains follows the extractive pattern identified in HC-002 — value flows to system operators rather than to the broader population affected by financial system decisions.

The structural requirement that strategic decisions with moral consequences, accountability implications, and irreducible uncertainty must retain human judgment in the decision loop — not as a transitional limitation but as a permanent architectural feature of systems embedded in social and legal accountability frameworks. In finance, the Judgment Reserve is the set of functions that remained human after routine processing was fully automated: the domain split's left column, empirically demonstrated.

What Follows

The finance pair is the first domain where the transition from mixed human-machine function to clean domain split is empirically complete in specific sub-functions. The Goldman Sachs transition, the DTCC straight-through processing system, and the concentration of high-frequency trading provide documented evidence — not forward projections — of where the split falls.
