Cognitive Entropy

Physics โ†’ Thermodynamics

Attention behaves like heat in one respect: without sustained input, it tends to dissipate toward disorder. A thermodynamic analogy for why focus is hard to hold.

The Question This Framework Answers

Why does attention naturally decay?

Status โ€” analogy, not literal physics. โ€œThe Second Law of Cognitionโ€ borrows the language of thermodynamics as a metaphor โ€” attention is not literally governed by entropy, and the 0โ€“10 scale is a heuristic. The real observation underneath is well-documented: without active effort, attention tends to drift toward lower-effort states. Treat the physics framing as a lens, not a measured law.

The โ€œSecond Law of Cognitionโ€ (an analogy)

In an unmanaged mind, attention tends to degrade toward the path of least resistance.

Corollary: Focus doesn't happen by default. It requires energy input to maintain order against natural decay.

Watch Entropy in Motion

Particles starting ordered gradually become disordered. Use the slider to control entropy level and see the transformation in real time.

5.0

Neutral state. At equilibrium.

Entropy Levels of Consciousness States

Lower entropy = more ordered, more capacity. Higher entropy = more disordered, less capacity.

The 0-10 Entropy Scale

0 Samadhi Perfect order, complete stillness
1 Flow Self-organizing, effortless order
2 Deep Focus Ordered, some effort required
3 Engaged Work Directed, normal maintenance
5 Neutral Equilibrium, rest state
6 Drift Beginning disorder
7 Boredom Disorder seeking resolution
8 Scroll High disorder, artificially stable โš ๏ธ
9 Overwhelm Maximum disorder
10 Dissociation Complete breakdown

Natural vs Engineered Decay

The critical difference: natural decay has exits. Engineered decay creates traps.

๐ŸŒฟ Natural Decay Path
Focus (2)
โ†“Drift (6)
โ†“Neutral (5)
โ†“Rest / Recovery
โ†“Focus (2) โ† Cycle completes
Key: Natural boredom is unstable. It resolves into rest, recovery, or renewed engagement. The system self-corrects.
โš ๏ธ Engineered Decay Path
Focus (2)
โ†“Drift (6)
โ†“Scroll (8) โ† TRAP
โ†ปScroll (8)
โ†ปScroll (8) โ† No exit
Key: Engineered scroll is artificially stable at high entropy. Variable rewards prevent natural resolution. No recovery happens.

โš ๏ธ The Extraction Trap

Extraction technology creates stable high-entropy states that don't exist in nature. Natural boredom (entropy 7) is unstableโ€”it pushes toward resolution. Engineered scroll (entropy 8) is artificially stabilized through variable reward schedules and infinite content. You're held at maximum disorder with no natural exit. This is the mechanism of attention capture.

Entropy Production Rates

Different activities produce or reduce entropy at different rates.

Activity Entropy Effect Notes
Meditation Negative (ordering) Actively reduces entropy
Deep Work Negative (ordering) Builds structure, concentrates
Physical Exercise Negative (discharge) Resets, clears accumulated disorder
Nature Exposure Slightly Negative Nervous system regulation
Normal Work Low production Maintains, slight increase
Meetings Medium production Context switching adds disorder
Context Switching High production Destroys order rapidly
Scrolling Very High production Maximally disordering
Doomscrolling Extreme production Disorder + threat activation

Negentropy Generators

Activities that actively reduce entropy and restore order.
